How To Create Outfits From Your Existing Wardrobe

Posted on December 08 2015

I don't know about you, but trying to put together an outfit with my existing wardrobe used to be a major challenge. I'm talking I'd wear the same shirt 3 days in a row just so I didn't have to figure out a new way to wear that floral skirt, or printed jeans. (I may or may not still do that out of sheer laziness). Well, today I am here to help you overcome the "fear of putting together outfits" disease. Your days of standing in front of the closet wondering what in the heck you are going to wear are gone! Below, I've outlined four different ways to style basics from your closet, but first here is a list of my favorite non-essential essentials to style them with:
  • Fur Vest
  • Leopard Flats/Skirt/Jeans
  • Blanket Scarves
  • Solid Colored Jumpsuit (Future post on various ways to style a jumpsuit)
outfits, wardrobe, what to wear, style, fashion, clothes, shoes, vest, sweater, scarf, leopard print, jumper, romper, clothing, women's clothing, online store, boutique Ok, now back to the details -
1. Denim + Anything Really   This could be as simple as a collared denim button up, a solid denim shirt, maybe you own a denim skirt or dress. I love to mix denim with graphic tees, leopard print (my personal fave) textured shirts, the list goes on and on. Below are some pictures of my favorite denim match ups: how to create new outfits from your existing wardrobe
2. Plaid + Graphic Tee, Stripes   In my previous post, I considered plaid a basic because it is a timeless pattern. In my eyes, plaid goes with just about anything from graphic tees, to stripes, to polka dots, denim, solids, etc.. Here are some pictures of my favorite plaid match ups: how to create new outfits from your existing wardrobe
3. Basic Tops + Blanket Scarves, Cardigans, Vests...   As I'm sure you know, basic tops are amazing because they can be worn a million different ways with a million different accessories. I'd like to think I'm the queen of basic tops because I have every color and style imaginable in a basic. I love to wear a basic simply. Here are my favorite ways to wear a basic top: how to create new outfits from your existing wardrobe
4. Blazers & Cardigans + Dressy Tops, or Casual Tops   I used to be terrified or blazers and cardigans because one- I thought they were for old women, and two- I never knew how to pair them with what I already had in closet. Now, I see not only do they had great definition to your waist, but they can be so dang cute. Here are some ideas on you can wear them below: how to create new outfits with your existing wardrobe
Points to keep in mind when trying to create your own outfits:
  • Try to think outside the box with patterns. Don't be afraid to mix patterns up
  • Put items together that are in a similar color family
  • Have this outfit check list: one solid, one texture, one print
  • Dress up basics with detailed accessories like patterned shoes, patterned belts, bright colored jewelry, etc..
  • If everything is solid on top, stay away from solid shoes- find shoes that break it up
  • Yes, you can wear denim and denim. Add a pop of color if you'd like
  • Even lipstick can be considered an accessory to a simple outfit
  • Blazers with jeans and heels can be dressy, or you can make a blazer casual with a graphic tee, and flats

These suggestions are very general, but I truly want to help. If you are struggling to style a top, bottom, shoes, whatever it may be- email me an image of that item and I'd love to give you some ideas of what you could wear with it. I know there are a lot of random clothing items I didn't cover in this article so I would recommend using the bullet points above as a basic guideline. Now, get to stylin'!
